Chiang Rai drug bust

Two men were arrested with a large quantity of methamphetamine and “ice”, or crystal methamphetamine, with a street value of more than 100 million baht in a joint suppression operation in Thoeng district of Chiang Rai province on Sunday, officials said in a press conference Sunday.

Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotic Control Board (ONCB), said the operation was carried out by a combined force of the border patrol police, Pha Muang Task Force and Rangers Task Force 31.

Acting on information obtained in an intelligence operation, the authorities intercepted two pickup trucks in front of Wiang Thoeng Kindergarten in tambon Wiang of Thoeng district on Sunday and arrested two men – Jaroon Khamnoi, 56, and Prasong Saen-arthit, 34, both natives of Nan province.

Found in a search of the two vehicles were 496,000 methamphetamine pills and 30kg of crystal methamphetamine, worth altogether about 100 million baht.

Pol Gen Pongsapat said the drug haul followed a close watch on deliveries of drugs to five communities – Wat Duangkhae, Saphan Pun, Wat Phrayakrai, Surao Daeng and Wang SomĀ in Bangkok and on 69 drug dealers.

It was learned that the drugs delivered to these communities were supplied from the North by drug networks of a man called Jo and a woman identified as Suchinda Thuaypha, alias Jeh Phen, 43, who received the drugs which were smuggled across the border from Myanmar to Chiang Rai by a drug gang under Lt Col Yi Se.

The two men were delivering the drugs to the five Bangkok communities, Pol Gen Pongsapat said.
